What Are the Four Types of Metal Casting Furnaces?

The four types of metal casting furnaces are induction, crucible, resistance, and arc furnaces. Each operates on different principles and is suited to different applications.

1. Induction Furnaces

Induction furnaces use electromagnetic induction to heat metal directly. An alternating current passes through a coil surrounding the crucible, creating eddy currents in the metal charge that generate heat.

  • Best for: Iron, steel, and high-temperature alloys
  • Advantages: Fast melting, energy-efficient, precise temperature control, clean melting environment
  • Capacity range: 10 kg to several tons

2. Crucible Furnaces

Crucible furnaces heat metal in a refractory crucible using external heat from electric elements or gas burners. The metal is melted inside the crucible, which is then lifted out for pouring.

  • Best for: Aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, and other non-ferrous metals
  • Advantages: Simple design, affordable, easy to operate, portable (gas versions)

3. Resistance Furnaces

Resistance furnaces use electric heating elements to heat the furnace chamber. They're commonly used as muffle furnaces for laboratory and small-scale work.

  • Advantages: Excellent temperature control, clean operation, compact size
  • Capacity range: 1–30 kg typically

4. Arc Furnaces

Arc furnaces generate heat using an electric arc between electrodes and the metal charge. They're used for large-scale steel and iron production.

  • Best for: Steel, iron, and high-melting-point alloys
  • Advantages: Extremely high temperatures, high efficiency at large scale
  • Capacity range: Several tons to 100+ tons
  • Typical use: Steel mills, large industrial foundries

Which Type Should You Choose?

For beginners and hobbyists, a crucible furnace (electric or gas) is the best starting point. For small workshops, a resistance or small induction furnace offers good control and efficiency. For industrial production, induction and arc furnaces provide the capacity and performance needed for high-volume operations.
