Selecting the right furnace comes down to understanding your specific needs. Ask yourself:

  • What metal(s) will you melt? Different metals have different melting points, which determines the minimum temperature your furnace must achieve.
  • How much metal do you need to melt per session? This determines the crucible capacity you need.
  • Where will you operate the furnace? Indoor workshops favor electric furnaces, while outdoor or remote setups may benefit from gas-fired portability.
  • What is your budget? Entry-level hobby furnaces start around $200–$500, while industrial models can range from $2,000 to $50,000+.
  • What is your experience level? Beginners should start with simpler, safer electric furnaces before moving to gas or induction systems.

Furnace Sizes

Furnace size is primarily determined by crucible capacity — how much metal the furnace can melt in a single session:

Metal Compatibility

Not all furnaces can melt all metals. Match your furnace to the metals you plan to work with:

  • Aluminum (melting point: 1,220°F / 660°C): Most electric and gas furnaces can handle aluminum. Ideal for beginners.
  • Brass & Bronze (melting point: 1,650–1,950°F / 900–1,065°C): Requires a furnace capable of sustained 2,000°F+ temperatures. Graphite or silicon carbide crucibles recommended.
  • Copper (melting point: 1,981°F / 1,083°C): Needs a furnace rated for at least 2,100°F. Silicon carbide crucibles preferred.
  • Cast Iron (melting point: 2,100–2,200°F / 1,150–1,200°C): Requires high-temperature gas or induction furnaces rated for 2,500°F+. Silicon carbide crucibles or refractory-lined furnaces.
  • Steel (melting point: 2,500–2,700°F / 1,370–1,480°C): Requires industrial induction or arc furnaces capable of 2,800°F+.
  • Lead & Tin (melting point: 449–621°F / 232–327°C): Low-temperature electric melting pots are sufficient. Use dedicated crucibles to avoid contamination.
  • Zinc (melting point: 787°F / 419°C): Low-temperature furnaces work, but zinc fumes are hazardous — ensure excellent ventilation.

Temperature Ranges

Always choose a furnace with a maximum temperature rating at least 200–300°F above your target metal's melting point. This headroom ensures the furnace can maintain temperature under load and compensate for heat loss during pouring:

  • Up to 2,000°F (1,093°C): Aluminum, lead, tin, zinc, pewter
  • 2,000–2,400°F (1,093–1,316°C): Brass, bronze, copper, silver
  • 2,400–2,800°F (1,316–1,538°C): Cast iron, gold
  • 2,800°F+ (1,538°C+): Steel, titanium, industrial alloys
